Eligibility for the Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP)

Early Years Pupil Premium was introduced by government in April 2015 to help early years providers try to close the attainment gap between the most disadvantaged children and their peers. At the end of Reception, 19% fewer children eligible for Free School Meals achieve a “good level of development” (GLD) than children who are not eligible, and this gap has not closed significantly over the last few years (Ofsted, 2015:19). EYPP is intended to make a difference by having extra targeted strategies for the rate of progress these children make, and by ensuring practitioners focus specifically on these children’s progress.

 Guidance on the EYPP from the Department for Education (DfE) explains that children aged between 3 and 4 years old who attend state-funded early years provision are eligible for the EYPP if their family receives one of the following:

  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of state pension credit
  • Child tax credit (if the family is not also entitled to working tax credit and has an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working tax credit run-on
  • Universal credit
  • They have been in local authority care for one day or more in England or Wales
  • They have been adopted from care in England or Wales
  • They have left care under a special guardianship order or residence order in England or Wales

To attract the EYPP, children must be receiving free early years education but do not have to take up their full entitlement to 570 hours in order to receive the funding.

Accountability

We use our EYPP to ensure those children who are inexperienced make accelerated progress to close the gap between their progress and that of their less disadvantaged peers. It is also used to ensure those EYPP children who are currently where they are expected to be in terms of attainment and progress, are enabled to be more experienced in some areas of learning. We do this by ensuring that our staff are trained to deliver high quality teaching

 

As a maintained nursery school high quality teaching and learning is important to us. We value our families and aim to get to know them well. We set high aspirations and ensure that all of our staff are not only well qualified but also take responsibility for raising attainment for all children. We do this by adopting an individualised approach to addressing barriers to learning and emotional support, as well as providing access to generic support.

Last year we received over £6000 in funding and decided to spend the funding on:

- upskilling our teaching staff in the delivery of effective communication and language approaches with an explicit focus on extending children’s spoken vocabulary and drawing attention to new words, letters and sounds. This also include approaches more directly aimed at developing thinking and understanding through language, such as ‘sustained shared thinking‘ or ‘guided interaction’

-  a sports coach with a focus on improving outcomes across the prime areas

-  support for children and their families on an individual needs basis to ensure children were able to take advantage of the opportunities and experiences available to nursery.

- Actively involving parents in supporting their children’s learning and development through the story sacks workshops and rhyme time sessions.

This year we will continue to spend the funding on sports coaching, additional training, developing the home learning environment and continuing to widen the life experiences of the child and family. In addition we will be using some of the funding to pay for additional hours to release key staff to work directly with eligible children.

The Nursery is ultimately responsible for identifying eligible children and it is therefore important to us that we find out who is eligible for EYPP funding so that we can inform the local authority and they can provide the appropriate funding.
